This Stupid Prada Phone Is the Best Looking Android I've Ever Seen [Rant]

This is pathetic. Motorola and HTC, with their circus vixen's arsenal of makeup slathered over Google's native UI, ought to be ashamed. This idiotic LG/Prada luxury phone that nobody will buy has one thing going for it: it looks nice. More »

Sport: Glasgow Warriors coach Sean Lineen has mixed emotions after Murrayfield draw

Warriors' Al Kellock goes over for a try as Glasgow stage a spirited fightback at Murrayfield

SEAN LINEEN cut a frustrated figure despite watching his Glasgow Warriors side fight back from 10 points behind to snatch a draw in a dramatic Murrayfield clash.

Glasgow lost the services of Rory Lamont who was taken to hospital for a precautionary scan after a head knock in only his second run-out since rejoining the Warriors.

Edinburgh then surged into a 23-13 lead after 55 minutes, courtesy of Tim Visser's try double, a Ross Rennie try and eight points from Greig Laidlaw's boot.

But Warriors replacement Ruaridh Jackson claimed Glasgow's third try three minutes from time to level the scores.

Scotland fly-half Jackson was denied further heroics as he missed the subsequent conversion and a last-minute penalty in blustery winds, but the Warriors' unbeaten league run was extended to seven matches.

Alastair Kellock and Colin Shaw also scored tries for Glasgow, with Duncan Weir kicking eight points.

Lineen was frustrated with the opening exchanges of either half and at missing the opportunity to claim victory.

He said: "First half wasn't great. Again. We didn't start well, our discipline was poor and we hung off them in defence.

"At times it wasn't pretty but we scrambled and hung in there.

"At the beginning of the second half the momentum was with Edinburgh.

"We dug back and we could've won the game at the end there. We didn't."

Prolific Dutch winger Visser, who will qualify for Scotland in June, scored twice in three second half minutes, both scores being awarded after close inspection from the television match official.

Lineen was reluctant to criticise the decisions, particularly the first which appeared marginal.

Lineen added: "Visser did a lot of the hard work and we could've stopped it a lot earlier. That's our fault.

"At least one of them it appeared he had dropped the ball over the line - he actually said that to one of our players.

"The lad's very difficult to tackle and he was outstanding in his running so we should've stopped him a lot earlier than the try line."

Edinburgh head coach Michael Bradley was upbeat despite the draw, with the teams set to meet at Firhill on New Year's Day.

"Glasgow are nine points ahead of us in this league and deservedly so," he said.

"They weren't going to give up easily. A couple of things went our way at the start of the second half and then they did what they do, which is kept the pressure on us, and we weren't able to close out the game.

"The two tries we got in the second half were exceptional work by the boys and for Tim to get the call on the TMO was great.

"Glasgow, as we knew, came back at us and we just weren't able to control the last 20 minutes. They were very dominant in the last 20 minutes and kept us under pressure.

"With a couple of minutes to go it was looking difficult for us and they had two kicks to win it.

"From 20 minutes out I was delighted with a potential win and with two minutes to go I was happy enough to get a draw."

Progress Energy to cover at least $28 million in Red Hat's downtown rent

Red Hat, the Triangle software company, has been promised several years in free rent and huge discounts in other years as part of a sweet deal from Progress Energy to sublease its office building in downtown Raleigh.

Red Hat reported this week in a federal regulatory filing that it expects to receive at least $28 million from Progress toward its real estate rent. That represents a 32 percent discount over the life of the $87 million lease.

The terms of the real estate lease effectively mean that Red Hat will be paid by Progress, a Fortune 500 electric utility, to occupy the 19-story building for a chunk of the long-term lease through 2035.

Officials at Progress and Red Hat could not be reached for comment to elaborate on their real estate contract. However, Progress has been under pressure to find a tenant to occupy the headquarters it plans to dismantle as part of its corporate merger with Charlotte-based Duke Energy.

"We were pleased we were able to complete the agreement with Red Hat," said Progress spokesman Jeff Brooks. "This agreement is important to downtown Raleigh and will help the city thrive."

Brooks said no one at the company was available this afternoon to discuss those details.

Red Hat had initially expected to begin moving in at 100 E. Davie Street this month, but the move has been delayed by several months. According to Red Hat's filing Tuesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Progress will have to make the building available for Red Hat by Jan. 1, 2013.

Progress and Duke had expected to have their $26 billion deal completed by the end of this year but glitches with federal regulators mean the merger will likely take three to six more months to complete, setting back Red Hat's move from N.C. State University's Centennial Campus to downtown Raleigh.

Progress is freeing up one of its two downtown office towers because the company is eliminating between 700 and 1,000 jobs in Raleigh, a part of a broader plan by Progress and Duke to eliminate 1,860 jobs over three years.

Red Hat is planning to transfer 600 employees downtown, with plans to add more than 500 workers in subsequent years.

According to the software maker's SEC filing, its monthly base rent will be $380,000 from July 1, 2013 through Dec. 31, 2020. But Red Hat won't make full payments every year.

Progress will provide an "initial improvement allowance" on July 1, 2012 in the amount of $3.2 million, a year before Red Hat is scheduled to start paying rent. For the following three years, Progress will credit Red Hat's rent to the tune of $3.2 million each year -- or $12.8 million over four years -- offsetting much of the software maker's annual $4.6 million rent bill.

Red Hat's rent will go down to $320,000 a month -- or $3.8 million a year -- starting in 2021. The lease will expire Aug. 23, 2035.

But for four of those years -- from 2028 through 2031 -- Progress will provide "additional improvement allowance" to Red Hat. The allowance will be a credit equal to the amount of Red Hat's base rent, or a total of $15.2 million.

Bring Out the Kwanzaa Kinara

I don't know where we got a candelabrum. But there we were, lighting the candles in the kinara and reciting Swahili words like umoja, ujima, and kujichagulia while my brother poured water from an earthenware jug onto a half-dead plant. We placed whatever fruit we had (apples, oranges, bruised bananas) onto a table festooned with African objets d'art, the kinara, and a small jug of water. For seven nights, we lit a candle and recited one of the Nguzo Saba principles, like nia for faith. The Swahili didn't roll off our tongues, but we liked how it sounded. We performed a libation, pouring liquid from the kikombe cha umoja, or unity cup, into soil in remembrance of our ancestors.

Inflation eases, creates space for Fed stimulus (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? U.S. consumer prices were flat in November as Americans paid less for cars and gasoline, a further sign of a cool down in inflation that could give the Federal Reserve more room to help a still-weak economy.

The Labor Department said on Friday the Consumer Price Index was unchanged last month. Economists had expected an increase of 0.1 percent.

Prices spiked earlier in the year but the report showed the trend has shifted. Over the past 12 months, prices have risen 3.4 percent. That marked a second monthly decline from a three-year high in September.

The report "leaves the Fed ample cover for any additional monetary policy accommodation they may see warranted in the New Year," said Ian Lyngen, a bond strategist at CRT Capital Group in Stamford, Connecticut.

Still, some of the data could give pause to policymakers at the central bank.

Outside food and energy, prices climbed a faster-than-expected 0.2 percent. These so-called core prices rose 2.2 percent in the 12 months through November, up from 2.1 percent in October.

"Core inflation ... is a bit more persistent than what some people had expected," said Jeremy Lawson, and economist at BNP Paribas in New York.

Economists and investors see inflation slowing further over the coming months, which could help convince the Fed to do more to bring down the country's 8.6 percent unemployment rate.

Prices for U.S. government debt rose slightly as investors saw the data opening the door a bit wider to stimulative Fed action. U.S. stocks rose and the dollar fell against the euro as investors remained on edge over the euro zone's debt crisis.

The U.S. recovery has picked up momentum over the past few months, but the Fed on Tuesday warned that turmoil in Europe still presents a big risk to the U.S. economy and it kept the option of further monetary stimulus on the table.

FED EASE STILL IN PLAY

In an appearance before Congress on Friday, New York Federal Reserve Bank President William Dudley defended a decision by the U.S. central bank to provide dollars for banks overseas, warning of the risks of disruptive asset sales if liquidity dried up.

"If the access to dollar funding were severely impaired, this would necessitate the abrupt forced sales of dollar assets by these banks, which could seriously disrupt U.S. markets and adversely affect U.S. businesses, consumers and jobs," he said.

A 2.4 percent drop in gasoline prices and a 0.3 percent decline in the cost of new vehicles dragged down overall prices in November. Prices for food rose 0.1 percent, while within the core index, prices for apparel jumped 0.6 percent.

Many economists have said the Fed could try to give the economy a bit of help at a meeting on January 24-25 by laying out forecasts for interest rates that could underscore its willingness to keep borrowing costs ultra-low for a prolonged period.

The U.S. central bank has held overnight interest rates near zero since December 2008 and has bought $2.3 trillion in government and mortgage-related bonds in a further attempt to stimulate a robust recovery.

Some Fed watchers also think the U.S. central bank will step up bond buying later in 2012.

Romney: Illegal immigrants should have to leave (AP)

SIOUX CITY, Iowa ? Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney says he's all for immigration, as long as it's legal and policies don't reward those who are already here.

On Thursday night, Romney and his rivals discussed illegal immigration at the GOP debate. Romney says workers who have come to the U.S. illegally would have to leave the country but would be eligible to apply to return as long as they went to the back of the line.

Newt Gingrich says the nation has to be realistic in confronting the millions of workers without documentation. But Gingrich also says he would cut off funding for so-called sanctuary cities and would drop federal lawsuits against states with tough anti-immigration laws.

Downey's Sherlock battles Moriarty in film sequel

In 2009, British film writer/director Guy Ritchie shocked Sherlock Holmes purists by rebooting the classic crime-fighting character for a new generation of movie fans.

Gone were the traditional ? and easily parodied ? capes, deerstalker hats and pipes. Instead, as embodied by Robert Downey Jr., the famous detective was now part intellectual sleuth, part martial arts action-hero, and he was partnered with a slimmed-down, pumped-up Watson, played by Jude Law.

Slideshow: December movies (on this page)

The result? Elementary ? a $525 million global box office hit. And now the team are back in the sequel, "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows", set for release on Friday.

"It was such a cathartic experience the first time around, and such an enjoyable one, that we all just wanted to do it again," said Ritchie, who made his mark with the flashy, indie gangster caper "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels."

Story: Ritchie calls marriage to Madonna 'soap opera'

This time, Holmes and Watson face a new adversary, the brilliant but evil Professor James Moriarty (Jared Harris) who is scheming to bring down European governments and has threatened the life of a Gypsy fortune teller (Swedish actress Noomi Rapace, in her first English-speaking role).

Downey Jr. said that while the actors had a tight script from which to work, ad-libs and on-set improvisation were very much the guiding force of the production.

"It's a democracy in the truest and most frustrating and most rewarding sense of the word," said Downey Jr. whose Holmes once again wears many disguises including one drag outfit.

Story: What Would Sherlock Holmes Do in a Bad Economy?

Harris said that being thrown into the tight-knit group of previous Holmes collaborators was "quite a challenge." He said he would bring up ideas "and even if they didn't like them, they'd nod politely and just never circle back to them."

The classically-trained actor (son of actor Richard Harris) had to learn to be prepared for the unexpected.

"Sherlock Holmes" sequel connects all the dots, yet goes mysteriously awry

"Jared and I would have a scene we'd be shooting in two days, and he'd say, 'Is this going to pretty much stay like this?' and I'd go, 'Not a word of it,'" said Downey Jr. "And it'd be like that."

Ultimately, Downey Jr. said "everything Jared did ... was essentially thrown at him with very little time to prepare, so it was 'shock and awe,' an exercise in trial by fire."

Story: Guy Ritchie a father for the second time

Early reviews have been mixed with Hollywood trade paper Variety saying the sequel improves on the original ? thanks largely to the scenes between Holmes and Moriarty.

The Hollywood Reporter, however, said the action "perhaps arresting the first couple of times you see it, already seems hackneyed, mannered and overworked."

(AP) ? Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck entered the season as the overwhelming favorite to win the Heisman Trophy.

He will head to New York for the presentation of college football's most famous player of the year award having relinquished front-runner status to another quarterback ? one known as RG3.

Luck, along with Robert Griffin III, Trent Richardson, Tyrann Mathieu and Montee Ball are the Heisman finalists. The group, announced Monday on ESPN, will be at the presentation Saturday night in Manhattan.

It's a return trip for Luck, the only repeat finalist this season, while Griffin is the first Baylor player to get an invite to the ceremony. The school has never had a player finish better than fourth in the Heisman voting, but now it seems to have the favorite.

"I'm sure it will be a really close vote," Griffin told reporters in Waco, Texas, after watching the announcement with teammates and coaches.

Richardson is the second Alabama running back to be a finalist in the past three years. Former teammate Mark Ingram won the Heisman in 2009.

Ball has scored 38 touchdowns for Wisconsin and needs one more to match Barry Sanders' NCAA record.

Mathieu, the LSU defensive back nicknamed "Honey Badger," has made numerous game-changing plays for the top-ranked Tigers.

The field was deep this season and several deserving players didn't make the cut. Most notable, Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore, a finalist last season, Southern California quarterback Matt Barkley and Houston's record-breaking passer, Case Keenum, did not receive enough votes to be among the final five.

Ballots from the 926 voters, mostly media members and former winners, were due Monday evening.

Luck was the Heisman runner-up to Auburn's Cam Newton last year and passed up a chance to be the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft to return to Stanford for his junior season. From the moment he made the decision to stay in school in January, he became the odds-on favorite to win the big bronze statue.

Luck is looking to become Stanford's second Heisman winner, joining quarterback Jim Plunkett, who won in 1970.

"It would mean a lot," Luck said in an interview on ESPN. "I would mean a great deal for the university. Mean a lot to me and a great deal to the football program, as well."

He had another stellar season, passing for 3,170 yards with 35 touchdowns while leading the Cardinal to an 11-1 record and a second straight BCS bid. But the competition has been fierce and numerous contenders emerged.

The prognosticators now have Griffin as the most likely winner.

Heismanpundit.com, which has successfully predicted the past four winners with a straw poll of 13 voters, had Griffin as its top vote-getter on Monday. Luck was second and Richardson third.

Stiffarmtrophy.com, which compiles ballots from voters who make their choices public and has predicted the past nine winners, had Griffin winning by a comfortable margin over Luck, with Richardson third.

Griffin leads the nation in passer rating (192.3), with 3,998 yards and 36 touchdowns. He has also run for 644 yards and nine touchdowns. And much like Luck, Griffin has led a long-struggling program to its greatest success in decades. Baylor is 9-3 this season, its first nine-win season since 1986, including its first victory against Oklahoma.

"Baylor nation we're in there," Griffin said. "Now we just got to try to snatch it. Hopefully the vote turns out our way.

"Being invited is an honor. It's not all that we want, but it's a starting spot."

The best showing a Baylor player has had in the Heisman voting was quarterback Don Trull's fourth-place finish in 1963.

Richardson has been the unquestioned offensive engine for No. 2 Alabama. He's fifth in the nation in rushing at 131.9 yards per game and tied for fifth in touchdowns with 23. Richardson and the Crimson Tide will meet Mathieu and LSU in the BCS championship game on Jan. 9 in New Orleans.

The sophomore cornerback is the second defensive player to be a Heisman finalist in the past three years. Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh of Nebraska finished fourth in 2009.

Mathieu, though, is more like Charles Woodson, the do-it-all defensive back who won the 1997 Heisman for Michigan.

Mathieu has forced five fumbles, intercepted two passes and scored four touchdowns, including two long punt returns in LSU's past two games against Arkansas and Georgia.

He also was suspended for a game this season for violating the team's drug policy.

Ball has been a touchdown machine for Wisconsin and ranks fourth in rushing at 135.3 yards per game. He has 12 more touchdowns than the next best player in the nation and if he can tack on two more in the Rose Bowl against Oregon, he'll break Sanders' record.

Boeheim apologizes for questioning Fine accusers (AP)

SYRACUSE, N.Y. ? Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim apologized Friday for questioning the motives of the men who accused his longtime assistant of molesting them as minors, saying he reacted out of loyalty.

"I believe I misspoke very badly in my response to the allegations that have been made," said Boeheim, who spoke slowly and paused frequently during a postgame press conference. "I shouldn't have questioned what the accusers expressed or their motives. I am really sorry that I did that, and I regret any harm that I caused."

Former assistant coach Bernie Fine has been accused of child sex abuse by three men, including two former Syracuse ballboys. Fine, who was fired Sunday, has denied the allegations.

Boeheim said his apology and regrets came from the heart.

"No one said this is what you should say," he said. "This is what I feel."

When the allegations first surfaced, Boeheim adamantly defended Fine and accused the men of lying for money.

"What I said last week was out of loyalty," he said. "I acted without thinking. I couldn't believe what I was hearing."

Advocates for sex abuse victims had called for Boeheim to resign or be fired for his disparaging remarks.

Speaking after No. 4 Syracuse beat No. 10 Florida on Friday, Boeheim said his initial comments were "insensitive to the individuals involved and especially to the overall issue of child abuse."

It's the second time in less than a week that Boeheim has softened his stance toward the accusers.

After Fine was fired Sunday, Boeheim released a statement saying he regretted "any statements I made that might have inhibited that from occurring or been insensitive to victims of abuse."

On Tuesday, Boeheim insisted he didn't regret backing Fine when the allegations were first made public.

Boeheim said he spent time this week at the McMahon Ryan House for child abuse in Syracuse and plans to get involved to help raise awareness.

"I'm going to do everything I can to do that," he said, no matter whether he's coaching or not. "I've always been committed to kids. There's no question in my mind the issue of abuse is the No. 1 thing we should all be concerned about in this community."

One of the accusers, Bobby Davis, now 39, told ESPN last month that Fine molested him beginning in 1984 and that the sexual contact continued until he was around 27. A ball boy for six years, Davis said the abuse occurred at Fine's home, at Syracuse basketball facilities and on team road trips, including the 1987 Final Four. Davis' stepbrother, Mike Lang, 45, who also was a ball boy, told ESPN that Fine began molesting him while he was in the fifth or sixth grade.

A third accuser, 23-year-old Zach Tomaselli of Lewiston, Maine, came forward Sunday. He said he told police that Fine molested him in 2002 in a Pittsburgh hotel room after a game. He said Fine touched him "multiple" times in that one incident.

The U.S. Attorney's Office and the U.S. Secret Service are leading an investigation of child molestation allegations against Fine.

Earlier Friday, USA Basketball said Boeheim's spot on the coaching staff of the U.S. basketball team remained secure, though the U.S. Olympic Committee is monitoring the child sex abuse investigation of Fine.

Boeheim is the top assistant to Mike Krzyzewski on the team that will play at the 2012 London Olympics.

Asked about Boeheim's status, USA Basketball spokesman Craig Miller said, "Jim Boeheim is a member of the USA Men's National Team coaching staff.'"

The USOC declined comment, though a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press the federation is following the issue. The person spoke to The AP on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

Two high-profile Olympic sports have dealt with allegations of child sex abuse in the past two years.

In 2010, USA Swimming was hit by a number of sex-abuse allegations by coaches. More recently, 1984 Olympic gymnastics coach Don Peters was banned for life by USA Gymnastics after being accused of sexually abusing two athletes in the 1980s.

Over the past 18 months, the USOC has increased efforts to ensure safe environments for children who participate in Olympic sports.

The federation adopted a task force that encouraged the national governing bodies to adopt standardized policies to prevent abuse. It also hired an attorney to serve as the director of ethics and safe sport.

Boeheim was on the U.S. coaching staff in 1990 and returned in 2006.

Two dead after ceasefire in Yemen city clashes (Reuters)

SANAA (Reuters) ? At least two Yemenis were killed in a third day of shelling in the hotbed protest city of Taiz on Saturday, residents said, before a ceasefire in clashes between troops loyal to President Ali Abdullah Saleh and opposition fighters which have killed 17 people.

Saleh handed over power last month to Vice-President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, as part of a deal to end 10 months of protests against his 33-year-old rule that has paralyzed Yemen.

But the violence has shown little sign of abating.

The governor of Taiz and opposition officials agreed a ceasefire from 2 p.m. (6 a.m. EST) and the withdrawal of fighters and heavy weapons following a call by Hadi, state news agency Saba reported.

Residents said intermittent fighting could still be heard.

"A seven-storey building has been set on fire," Abdel-Jabbar Mahmnoud told Reuters by telephone from the al-Hasab district in Taiz.

He said residents had fled shelling by government forces based at a security compound in the city.

Tens of thousands earlier defied the shelling to march in the city centre demanding that Saleh be put on trial.

Residents said government forces used artillery, tanks and rockets on Saturday in residential areas of Taiz, trapping about 3,000 families in the commercial hub some 200 km (120 miles) south of the capital Sanaa.

Opposition fighters responded with medium and light fire, they said.

Medics said two people were killed, one of them an activist shot by a sniper during the demonstration. The second was a bakery worker killed in front of his shop. Four people were also wounded, including one woman.

An official from Saleh's party said the latest violence came amid differences with opposition parties over the composition of a military committee agreed last month as part of the transitional deal following Saleh's handover of his powers.

Ten people died in fighting on Thursday, including five government soldiers, and five more were killed on Friday, medics and security sources have reported.

A rights centre run by the opposition put the death toll at 21 people.

Saba quoted security sources as saying that armed groups were behind Friday's attacks on government facilities, including the criminal investigations building, the regional branch of the Immigration and Passports Department and a military camp.

The opposition blamed the army controlled by Saleh loyalists and relatives.

Opposition officials on Friday contacted representatives of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council over the fighting, they said.

Saba said British Foreign Secretary William Hague also told Hadi in a telephone call on Friday that the UK was monitoring the situation in Yemen, hoping that "the government of national reconciliation, after it is formed, would ensure security and stability in the capital and in the capitals of the provinces."

AGREEMENT IN DANGER

Prime Minister-designate Mohammed Basindwa, an opposition leader, has warned that his side would rethink its commitments under the transition deal if the fighting in Taiz did not stop.

In a statement, Basindwa said the bombardment was "an intentional act to wreck the agreement" that opposition parties signed along with Saleh, who had backed out of signing the deal brokered by Yemen's Gulf neighbors three times.

Under the agreement, the military committee, headed by Hadi, would run the armed forces and oversee the end of fighting and the return of forces to barracks.

It would be made up of an equal number of people from Saleh's General People's Congress (GPC) and the opposition Joint Meeting Parties (JMP).

An official with the GPC said Saleh's party was not happy about opposition nominees to the committee.

The opposition blamed the Taiz violence on what they said was footdragging in forming the military committee.

"The vice president must act as a consensus president and be responsible for implementing the operational mechanism without delay," he told Reuters.

In separate violence, gunmen killed a colonel in the intelligence service at a coffee shop in the city of Ghayl Ba Wazir in Hadramout province, in southern Yemen, on Friday evening, local officials said. A resident was also killed and three were wounded in the attack, blamed on al Qaeda.

It was the latest in a series of attacks in recent months on senior officers in the army and security forces in southern Yemen.

Spotify gets app-happy with new platform (video)

Don't say we didn't warn you. As previously reported, today's Spotify "what's next" event in New York City is all about the apps. The Swedish music streaming service's CEO Daniel Ek took the stage today to officially unveiled its new app finder, a platform aimed at bringing users music related info like info like lyrics, events and magazine record reviews. Announced partners include Rolling Stone, The Guardian, Last.fm, Billboard, Pitchfork and more. The company considers the platform the next step in a social strategy that the company began with Facebook integration, a move that brought a vast number of new users to the service.

According to Ek, Spotify is using the platform to add features of its own, as well, including new Facebook-style social stream that lets you see what friends are doing on the service in real-time. The platform will be open to everyone, according to the company, but Spotify will get final approval of all apps before they make their way onto the service.
