If you ever can discover just one component that could be viewed as one of many most basic badminton products that would certainly be the badminton rackets. Folks can in all likelihood perform the game with out the newest outfits, sneakers and web. They could just develop a makeshift shuttlecock out of some low-priced elements likewise. Even so, while not owning badminton rackets, men and women are not able to certainly do anything at all whatsoever. That simply being Badmintonketcher said, folks who prefer to take pleasure in badminton and/or really serious with regards to taking part in the game will have to decide for the most effective racket for them. A badminton racket possesses three primary components: take care of, shaft and head. The collection of features and good quality involving every component will decide which a person will be the best for people to help make use of. It is actually genuinely often an choice involving using additional electrical power or simply a great deal much more handle associated with the racket. It could also be dependent within the level of capacity with the participant. Normally, the consumer will pinpoint primarily based upon the problem with the head, balance and weight in the racquet, tightness of the shaft and also the dimensions within the grip.

The head can be square-shaped or an oblong head. Square-shaped badminton rackets present excess floor location. In short, utilizing this sort of racquet will give a player increased options of hitting the shuttlecock. In contrast, an oval head racket includes a lesser floor area but gives a more concentrated electric power. With regards towards the harmony within the racket, an individual can select from three versions: head mild, balance or head major. The head gentle racquet is significantly less tricky to handle or maneuver. It offers the person a quicker mobility too. A head light racket is usually recommended for novices. A harmony form is obviously properly well balanced about the head and handle excess fat. That is ordinarily applied by mid-level competent people. The head significant kind is typically for skilled or sophisticated players since it could actually be far a lot more challenging to use. However, it?s significantly far much more stable and could give a great bargain of strength when appropriately handled.
The tightness of a badminton racket really should be also deemed. Rigidity may be categorized as further stiff, stiff or flexible. Additional stiff badminton rackets together with the varieties that has remarkably minimal give and so are for superior people. They current loads a lot more handle. A stiff racket is perfect for competent users, even though the versatile varieties are proposed for novices. Substantially even more overall flexibility implies even more electric power a racket can generate. Badminton players will need to weigh up in the grip proportions in addition. The grip dimension is the dimensions belonging to the racket take care of. It absolutely is essential for individuals to believe it or not examination the grips on their own. There essentially aren?t any exact recommendations on deciding within the most beneficial grip dimension as an individual?s conclusion is commonly influenced by his individual personalized desire and/or hand dimension.
Alongside these racket attributes, men and women can decide on the products with the badminton rackets. Metal or conceivably light-weight aluminium will be the most prevalent. Yet, for anyone that motivation a racquet that?s aerodynamic and significantly light, they will opt to get those made of carbon-fiber. A badminton racket is known as a really very important gear if anyone wants to perform the game. Nevertheless, much greater than the badminton rackets in addition to other equipment, individuals must typically do not forget to become reliable and have enjoyment.

Don Cornelius took 'Soul Train' on pioneering trip (AP)

NEW YORK ? In an era when Beyonce and Jay-Z are music royalty, when Barack Obama is the nation's chief executive, and when black stars in the cast of a TV show are commonplace, it may be hard to grasp the magnitude of what Don Cornelius created once he got his "Soul Train" rolling.

Yes, the syndicated series delivered the music of Earth Wind & Fire, the Jacksons, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder into America's households, infusing them with soul in weekly doses. Yes, it gave viewers groovy dances and Afro-envy, helping get them hip to a funky world that many had never experienced, or maybe even suspected.

But it was more than that. Before BET would give African-Americans their own channel, and before black music and faces found their way to MTV videos as well as network dramas and comedies, "Soul Train" became a pioneering outlet for a culture whose access to television was strictly limited.

"Most of what we get credit for is people saying, `I learned how to dance from watching "Soul Train" back in the day,'" Cornelius told Vibe magazine in 2006. "But what I take credit for is that there were no black television commercials to speak of before `Soul Train.' There were few black faces in those ads before `Soul Train.'

"And what I am most proud of," he added, "is that we made television history."

"Soul Train" (which went on for 35 seasons) didn't make history just by influencing the music charts. It served as a pop-culture preview and barometer of fashion, hairstyles and urban patois.

By some measure, "Soul Train" was the equivalent of Dick Clark's "American Bandstand," although belatedly. Arriving on the wave of the Civil Rights Era, it premiered 13 years after "Bandstand" went national, then took a while longer to attract local stations to air it and advertisers to support it.

From there, it became a Saturday afternoon ritual as soul and rap artists (and white artists, too, including Elton John and David Bowie) showed off their latest releases while kids responded on the dance floor.

"When you come up with a good idea, you don't have to do a whole lot," Cornelius told The New York Times in 1996 in describing his show's formula. "The idea does it for you."

On "Soul Train" ("the hippest trip in America," the announcer proclaimed, "across the tracks of your mind") the host, of course, was Cornelius, but to describe him as the black Dick Clark is somewhat misleading. (A bit like calling Pat Boone the white Little Richard, as David Bianculli noted in his "Dictionary of Teleliteracy.")

For Cornelius, the difference was in the execution, as he told The Associated Press in 1995.

"If I saw `American Bandstand' and I saw dancing and I knew black kids can dance better; and I saw white artists and I knew black artists make better music; and if I saw a white host and I knew a black host could project a hipper line of speech ? and I DID know all these things," then it was reasonable to try, he said.

On his show, Cornelius was the epitome of cool, with a baritone rumble that recalled seductive soul maestro Barry White, and an unflappable manner all the way through the hour to his trademark sign-off: "We wish you love, peace, and SOUL."

He laced his show with pro-social messages directed at his black audience.

On a 1974 program, he interviewed James Brown about the tragedy of violence in black communities ("black-on-black crime looks very bad in the sight of The Man," Brown said sorrowfully). Then he brought on a 19-year-old Al Sharpton, already a civil rights activist, who presented Brown with an award for his music.

But Cornelius never let preaching get in the way of "Soul Train's" hipness ? or of his own.

Standing by Mary Wilson of the Supremes on another edition, he sported a slim black suit that flared into bellbottoms, a grey shirt with white polka dots, and a huge afro.

"What do you do for kicks?" he asked Wilson, who mentioned bowling as one hobby, but said how much she wanted to dance with Cornelius on "Soul Train."

"You can dance with me," Cornelius replied. "But not on television."

Childhood Brain Tumors Linked To Newly Discovered Mutations ...

Childhood Brain Tumors Linked To Newly Discovered Mutations

31 Jan 2012???

A recent study published in the online edition of the scientific journal Nature Genetics of rare, lethal childhood tumors of the brainstem has revealed that almost 80% of tumors contain gene mutations that have previously not been associated with cancer. According to early evidence, gene alterations also implicate other aggressive pediatric brain tumors. The results provide a significant insight into a poorly understood tumor that has a mortality rate of over 90% in patients within two years.

Almost exclusively prevalent in children, the tumor called diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), an extremely invasive tumor that occurs in the brainstem at the base of the skull and controls such vital functions as breathing and heart rate, accounts for 10 to 15% of pediatric tumors of the brain and central nervous system. It is accurately diagnosed by non-invasive imaging and cannot be cured by surgery, which means that knowledge so far is limited as it is rarely biopsied in the U.S.

Study author Suzanne Baker, Ph.D., co-leader of the St. Jude Neurobiology and Brain Tumor Program and a member of the St. Jude Department of Developmental Neurobiology commented:

"We are hopeful that identifying these mutations will lead us to new selective therapeutic targets, which are particularly important since this tumor cannot be treated surgically and still lacks effective therapies."

Cancer is caused by a disruption of normal gene activity, enabling an unconstrained growth and spread of unchecked cells, which make the disease so lethal.

The study findings showed that 78% of the DIPG tumors displayed changes in one of two genes that both belong to the histone H3 family of proteins, which hold instructions for producing proteins that play comparable roles in packaging DNA inside cells. In order to fit into the nucleus, the DNA must be wrapped around histones to make it sufficiently compact and depending on how the histones package the DNA, the genes are either switched on or off.

The same applies to repairing DNA mutations and for maintaining their stability. A disruption of any of these processes potentially contributes to the development of cancer. According to the researchers, the mutations appear unique to aggressive childhood brain tumors.

Richard K. Wilson, Ph.D., director of The Genome Institute at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and one of the study's corresponding authors declared:

"It is amazing to see that this particular tumor type appears to be characterized by a molecular 'smoking gun' and that these mutations are unique to fast-growing pediatric cancers in the brain. This is exactly the type of result one hopes to find when studying the genomes of cancer patients."

The results from the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project (PCGP), at the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at Washington University, are the latest from an ambitious three-year endeavor of sequencing complete normal and cancer genomes of 600 children who have some of the most poorly understood and aggressive pediatric cancers.

The human genome contains the entire set of instructions required to construct and sustain human life. The aim of the PCGP is to detect variations that explain the development, spread and deadly impact of cancer in the quest of finding new diagnostic tools and methods for the treatment and prevention of the disease.

In their study, the researchers sequenced the complete normal and cancer genomes of seven patients with DIPG. Baker said:

"The mutations were found at such high frequency in the cancer genomes of those seven patients that we immediately checked for the same alterations in a larger group of DIPGs."

After sequencing all 16 of the related genes, which make closely related variants of histone H3 proteins in an additional 43 DIPGs, they discovered that many of the tumors contained the same mistakes in only two of these genes.

They found that 60% of the 50 DIPG tumors included in this study contained a single alteration in the makeup of the H3F3A gene and observed that during the translation of the mutated gene into a protein, the point mutation resulted in lysine being substituted with methionine as the 27th amino acid in this variant of histone H3 protein. The researchers discovered 18% of the DIPG patients also carried the same mistake in a different gene, in HIST1H3B.

The researchers now explore to understand what role the mutations in H3F3A and HIST1H3B have in terms of cell function and contribution to cancer. Some clues are provided through previous research said Baker, explaining that the mutated lysine is usually targeted by enzymes that attach other molecules to histone H3, which influences the way in which it interacts with other proteins that regulate gene expression.

Even though in other cancers mutations in the enzymes that target histone H3 have been also been detected, this is the first report that demonstrates a specific alteration of histones in cancer. In other aggressive childhood brain tumors, such as glioblastoma, which develops outside the brain stem.

H3F3A and HIST1H3B have also been mutated. The researchers discovered that from 36% of 36 such tumors in this study had one of three distinct point mutations in the genes, which included another single alteration in the makeup of H3F3A that has not been found in DIPGs.

The findings showed however, that any of the other 252 examined childhood tumors, including low-grade gliomas brain tumors, such as medulloblastomas and ependymomas as well as other cancers outside the brain and nervous system, had no mutations of the histone H3 genes. There have been no reports of H3 changes in any other cancers, including adult glioblastoma.

Baker concludes:

"This suggests these particular mutations give a very important selective advantage, particularly in the developing brainstem and to a lesser degree in the developing brain, which leads to a terribly aggressive brain tumor in children, but not in adults. This discovery would not have been possible without the unbiased approach taken by the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project. The mutations had not been reported in any other tumor, so we would not have searched for them in DIPGs. Yet the alterations clearly play an important role in generating this particular tumor."

How This Mom Manages Multi-Million Dollar Automotive

Stephanie Williams

Managing $800 million dollar accounts for three huge automotive manufacturers doesn?t rattle Stephanie Williams. For more than two decades she has led the way in the corporate automotive world, serving in roles like Supplier Diversity Development Business Manager, Purchasing Project Manager and Global Business Strategy Manager. In addition to heading up corporate projects, Williams is also married with two children, a ten-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl. As if that?s not enough, Stephanie is also an experienced public speaker who knows how to get results and the author of the book?Mommy Leadership. We caught up with the businesswoman and talked about her challenging career.

MN: You earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and a Masters of Business Administration in Marketing. Post graduation, how did you envision yourself combining the knowledge you?d gained from both degrees to advance your business career?

SW:??????? I knew I liked math and science, so I went into engineering.? After working as an engineer for one year, I felt that wasn?t the career for me. I realized that I enjoy the business side of enterprise versus the technical; I also enjoy talking to people.? Even though engineering was not the career for me, it taught me to be process oriented.?? I knew the business knowledge from the MBA would round out my expertise and allow me to do any number of things in my career.

MN: ?Tell us about two to three roles you filled during the earlier part of your corporate career. How have those early experiences benefitted you as a woman managing her own publishing and speaking platforms today???

SW: ?I began my career as an Industrial Engineer at General Motors working among professionals with many years of experience.? If nothing else, I learned to believe in myself and not to be afraid to try something new.?? I decided to take a chance at writing and public speaking even though my education was not in that field of study.? Each of my early roles in corporate America helped me learn to present my ideas in a clear and compelling manner.?

MN: What are the 8 Essential Rs and why are they important to business success?

SW: ?The 8 Essential R?s is my reminder to working moms (including myself) to take some time out of our busy schedules to regenerate. There are so many forces in life that women have to manage ? work, children, relationships.? These 8 R words walk through a mental process of renewal that helps me (and hopefully other women) prepare to do ?it? all over again tomorrow.? The 8 Essential R?s (rest, release, reflect, relish, replenish, refocus, resolve, repeat) is one of the tools to fight burnout so that we continue to strive toward our objectives ? business and personal.

MN: ?It?s been said that women and men have different leadership styles. For example, women are said to focus more on the purpose of a business initiative whereas men focus more on the financial aspect. What style do you use to lead business teams and projects? Share a few key benefits inherit in this style.

SW: ?I use a collaborative style. ?One person cannot know everything so it is imperative to assemble and develop a great team and to draw upon that expertise in your leadership role.? I have found that this style makes every team member feel valuable and motivated to see the team succeed.? It also allows for development of your team members as they work together and learn from you and each other.

MN: How long had you been working (and in what position) before you had your first child? Also, what type of deadlines, travel commitments, etc. were you living with before you left work to have your first child?

SW: ?I had been working for eight years before I had my first child. Roles I filled were as an Industrial Engineer, Purchasing Team Leader and Supplier Diversity Development Business Manager. ?As with most positions in corporate America, I was often required to work casual overtime in order to ?get the job done? and meet deadlines.? It was just what you did to show that you will do what it takes to deliver results.? I did not have to travel a lot, but when I did it was scheduled around the most senior person?s schedule and not mine. So I needed to be flexible.? I didn?t mind though because at that time I really had no other commitments.

MN: ?Some women have voiced concerns regarding motherhood and rewarding corporate careers, hinting that the two aren?t a good mix. Have you noticed a shift in the types of business roles and leadership opportunities women have been given after returning from maternity leave??

SW: ?Everyone has an opinion as to whether or not women can ?have it all.? ?I have spoken to many women who believe they have not been given equal consideration for leadership roles.? Most cannot state for certain that motherhood was the reason for being passed over for promotion.? I think that it?s really that companies assume mothers are not willing to make the required sacrifices and won?t consider them for leadership roles.

MN: In your book Mommy Leadership you say that mothers acquire leadership skills while raising their children. Which of these skills can automatically be transferred to the corporate world?

SW: ?Delegating: Running a successful household requires time and effort. To better manage your time, while at home, delegate tasks to each of your children based on their ages and abilities.? Delegating responsibility is a key skill for leaders that moms often practice.

People Development: Great leaders realize that their followers are the future of the organizations they lead.? By teaching and training followers, leaders raise the competence of the overall organization.? This important skill takes patience, the ability to identify the training need, and an ability to communicate concepts simply so that others can understand.

Mothers are their children?s most important teachers.? Children have to be taught or trained in every area of life.? Even though children are educated in school, mothers teach their children everything from walking to how to make friends.? Think of all the things mothers teach their children including tasks, skills, behaviors, ethics, and habits that are used throughout the rest of their lives. These people development skills are transferrable to the business world.

MN: ?You have more than two decades of experience working at senior levels in the corporate world. Obviously, you understand corporate lingo, politics and protocol. However, a woman who?s spent the last decade raising young children may not be as accustomed to the ins and outs of the business world. How can women who have no prior business experience, gain quality middle-management jobs and succeed at those jobs?

SW: ?Two words ? training and networking (in-person and online). ?Even before a woman raising children re-enters the workplace, she can educate herself on her industry of choice by reading industry related business magazines and websites.? She can also prepare herself for the workplace by participating in professional organizations to gain networking and volunteer opportunities. She can join organizations like Toastmasters International to practice public speaking.? There are also online communities, like MyWorkButterfly.com that provide information and support to working moms.

MN: ?What inspired you to write Mommy Leadership?

SW: ? I didn?t originally set out to write a book.? It began by writing journal entries to encourage myself and to express how I was feeling about how being a mom would change my career development. ?I spoke to some of my friends about the mommy leadership concept, and they encouraged me to put it in a book and share it with other moms.? I want every mom to know that motherhood is a leadership role and some motherhood skills can be transferred to other leadership roles.

MN: ?When did you launch your Mommy Leadership business and how do you find the time and energy to work both as an entrepreneur and corporate leader?

SW: ?Let me just say that it is not easy especially since my business is totally separate from my corporate career.? I simply have to maximize every moment and be as productive as possible.? Over the years I have learned how and when I am most productive. ?Knowing myself and my work habits helps me to do just that. ?Also, I have help ? some paid and some volunteer.? It also helps that I have a supportive husband and family.? Still, I sometimes have to put my business on hold more often than I would like.

MN:?????? What additional changes do you see on the horizon over the next five to seven years?

SW:??????? More stay-at-home dads, more alternative work schedules, and more moms starting businesses for maximum work flexibility.

MN: In 1993 the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) was passed. Under President Barack Obama?s Administration Health Care Reform was recently enacted. What other changes would you like to see at local, state and federal levels to support working mothers?

SW: ?I would like to see some level of benefits for part time workers that allow working parents the ability to work fewer hours but still have insurance.? I?d also like to see longer paid maternity leaves for parents.

MN: ?Tell us about two to three women who have inspired you as a business leader. What is it about these women that you find motivating and inspiring?

SW:??????? I have to say that I am most inspired by women who have achieved and are devoted mothers. ?Earlier this year, Forbes magazine published its list of the 100 Most Powerful Women.? I was inspired by the fact that many of them were mothers. Of course, Michele Obama was among the leaders in this group; she?s one of my Mommy Leader inspirations.
