Joe Biden Calls GOP a 'Different Breed of Cat'

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - Vice President Joe Biden often proclaims how different the Republican Party is from generations ago, but in Portsmouth, Ohio, today, he had a new way to describe them - a "different breed of cat."

"They're not bad guys. It's just a different, as my brother would say, different breed of cat," Biden said at Portsmouth High School.

In nearly every speech, Biden cites the transformation of the GOP with Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan now at the helm of the party, telling audiences "This is not your father's Republican Party."

Biden, whose son Beau is an Iraq war veteran, stressed the importance of acknowledging the sacrifices and contributions made by U.S. troops, a talking point he's focused on since Romney failed to mention Afghanistan in his convention speech in August.

"Folks, folks, let me ask you: How many of you, like me, had a son or a daughter who went to Iraq or Afghanistan? How many of you have a brother or sister. How many of you know somebody who's gone? You all know, you all know, we owe these young women and men an incredible debt to them, we owe those families an incredible debt," he said.

"Those of you who have people deployed, you know - five, ten times a day, it just flashes through your mind. Folks we owe so much," Biden later added. "This is going to go down, when we record this 9/11 generation, as the second greatest generation in the history of this country."

On NBC's Meet the Press Sunday, Romney continued to defend his omission of Afghanistan from his speech at the Republican National Convention, saying that policy is more important than words.

"I have some differences on policy with the president. I happen to think those are more important than what word I mention in each speech," Romney said.

A crowd of 700 gathered at the local high school to listen to Biden, who has campaigned in the state over the weekend and will return to the state Wednesday. The vice president expressed his comfort level campaigning in an area similar to where he grew up in Pennsylvania.

"If you know northeast Pennsylvania, you'll not be surprised. It's not a whole lot different than than southern Ohio, or actually a lot of parts of Ohio," Biden said. "I feel really comfortable here. I've been here a lot. I plan on coming back a lot."

As Democratic convention closes, Germany adjusts to a pragmatic Obama

President Obama did not deliver the kind of 'Yes we can' speech last night that wowed Germans four years ago. But most Germans are still eager to cheer for him ahead of November elections.

No longer larger than life, but still popular in Germany: President Obama takes the stage at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., on Thursday.

Gone are the days of candidate Barack Obama who inspired millions of Germans when he spoke at the Victory Column in Berlin in 2008. Four years later, in the wake of the Democratic National Convention, Germany is assessing the American president more soberly.

"In 2012, he is a man with gray hair and a spotty record," wrote the Financial Times Germany,? arguing that the president offered no new ideas or visions for a second term in the White House.

The Berlin-based left-wing daily taz.die tagezeitung wanted to hear more of a road map from President Obama, commenting:?"Barack Obama is still a good rhetorician. But he didn't have that much to say." It gave former President Bill Clinton credit for the best speech in North Carolina.

'Disheartened retailer'

Germans, like millions of people around the globe, fell in love with the charismatic politician who took the global stage four years ago and spoke in a voice very different from that of former President Bush, with whom Europe had a tumultuous relationship. And expectations were high once again before last night's speech.

But analysis of Obama's speech occurs now in the framework of a four-year record in office. "The self-proclaimed healer of the nation and the planet became a disheartened retailer who sells political light fare," sticking to what goes down easily, wrote the Frankfurt-based Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. The paper demanded more content from Obama than just asking for four more years.?

Munich-based Sueddeutsche Zeitung criticized Obama for not delivering a vision for America, writing that "compared to Michelle Obama and Bill Clinton, he delivered the poorest speech ? and missed out on a huge chance." He was more passionate than Mitt Romney in Tampa, Fla., last week, but that wasn't a great surprise to anyone. What was missing was a new slogan a lot of people were hoping for, the paper said.

Although Obama's speech got only average grades in Germany, the country is still rooting for him. As Spiegel Online put it in its analysis: "He was more president than campaigner." The Hamburg-based online publication argued that it could be enough simply to win against Mr. Romney in November, not blaming him for being more pragmatic in his approach: "It was a president, cornered by the Republican opposition."

Better choice

And the weekly Die Zeit pointed out that the world might have seen just a pragmatic politician last night in Charlotte, N.C.

"Despite all disillusion and disappointment, he still has this huge persuasive power to show why he ? in contrast to his challenger Mitt Romney ? is the better choice to lead a battered nation into a better future," the paper opined.

The prize for the most telling headline of all, though, goes to the Austrian daily Der Standard: "When Obama became reality."

Opposition to acquisition of land affecting devp ... - Real Estate India

??|?? September 9, 2012 ?? 07:27am ??|Contributed by manoja

PUNE: The region?s development was being hampered because of opposition to land acquisition, Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar said on Saturday. The Union government?s plans to establish a flower research institute in Pune region may shift to Bangalore if land was not made available, he added.

Pawar was speaking at a function organised by the Rose Society of Pune to mark its golden jubilee celebrations.

?Pune region has contributed in developing a variety of flowers and has taken a lead over other cities in India in exporting flowers, in recent times. During my tenure as agriculture minister, I want to establish a flower research institute near Pune, if land is made available,? said Pawar.

He added, ?There is immediate opposition after any project is announced and when steps are taken to acquire land. Some village committees in the name of saving land are formed and good projects are opposed. The media gives publicity to such opposition and nothing can progress.?

Pawar said he would talk to the state government about the institute. ?But land remains an issue. If matters do not work out, the institute will go to Bangalore,? he said.

India was self sufficient in foodgrains, but there were not enough godowns to store the produce. ?The union government is shifting its attention from foodgrain production to other produce like flowers and horticulture. India needs to increase its share in the global flower market,? said Pawar.

He presented G Kasturirangan with a gold medal instituted by the Rose Society of Pune for his contribution in developing rose varieties.

Obama: GOP Selling Tax Cuts to 'Help Your Love Life'

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Mocking his opponents' economic agenda, President Obama says Republicans are pushing tax cuts as the prescription to cure the ailing economy, "help you lose a few extra pounds," and even "help your love life."

The president unveiled the new quip Friday, but today he got a unique response as he kicked off his two-day campaign tour through Florida.

"It doesn't help!" shouted a man of his lacking love life.

Obama, seemingly caught off guard by the joke, laughed in response. "You tried those tax cuts, huh?" he asked.

"Actually it does help when you give it to folks who need it," the president continued, never missing an opportunity to push his economic proposals. "But I don't believe, and you don't believe, that another round of tax breaks for millionaires is going to bring good jobs back to our shores, or pay down our deficit."

Two days after formally accepting his party's nomination, the president reflected on the convention, suggesting former President Bill Clinton should be given a new cabinet position after his rousing speech.

"After he spoke, somebody sent out a tweet - they said, you should appoint him Secretary of Explaining Stuff," Obama told the crowd of 11,000 gathered in the sweltering heat at St. Petersburg College-Seminole Campus. "Although, I have to admit, it didn't really say 'stuff.' I cleaned that up a little bit."

Obama is spending the weekend on a campaign bus tour through the Sunshine State, part of his post-convention battleground state swing.

After his rally in St. Petersburg, the president rolled through Tampa, Fla., the site of the GOP convention two weeks ago, where he stopped for lunch at a Cuban sandwich shop.

"At their convention, they were more than happy to talk about everything they think is wrong with America, but they didn't say much about how they'd make it right. They want your vote, but they don't want you to know their plan," Obama said.
