Trapped killer whales freed by shifting ice?

A pod of killer whales, trapped by a sudden freeze since Tuesday, may have found a path to freedom, thanks to warmer weather and winds that shifted the ice floes around the orcas.

About a dozen killer?whales?trapped?under sea ice appeared to be free after the ice shifted, village officials in Canada's remote north said Thursday, while residents who feared they would get stuck elsewhere hired a plane to track them down.

The?whales' predicament in the frigid waters of Hudson Bay made international headlines, and locals had been planning a rescue operation with chainsaws and drills before the mammals slipped away.

Tommy Palliser said two hunters from remote Inukjuak village reported that the waters had opened up around the area where the cornered?whales?had been bobbing frantically for air around a single, truck-sized hole in the ice. Officials said shifting winds might have pushed the ice away.

"It's certainly good news ? that's good news for the?whales," said Palliser, a business adviser with the regional government.

But fears remained that the?whales?might have been?trapped?elsewhere by the ever-moving ice. Some villagers were skeptical the killer?whales?had escaped harm, so the community hired an airplane to scan the region Thursday for signs of the pod.

Mark O'Connor of the regional marine wildlife board said the aerial search did not locate the orcas, but he noted that large swaths of ice-free water were seen in the area.

"So as far as I could tell, the emergency, for sure, is averted," said O'Connor, the board's director of wildlife management.

"Whether the?whales?have found a passage all the way to the Hudson Strait, we probably will never know."

Locals said the?whales?had been?trapped?for at least two days. A recent, sudden drop in temperature may have caught the?whales?off guard, leaving them?trapped? The cornered animals were first seen Tuesday and appeared to have less energy by late Wednesday, Palliser said.

Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans said government icebreakers were too far from the area to smash the ice to free the?whales, Inukjuak Mayor Peter Inukpuk said Wednesday.

After that, Palliser said, locals had agreed to try to enlarge the breathing hole in the ice and cut a second opening using chainsaws and drills.

"We certainly had our prayers with them last night during our meeting," he said.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans issued a statement Thursday saying two scientists were en route to gather information and will monitor the situation. Ice-trapped marine mammals are not unusual in the region.

Pete Ewins, an expert in Arctic wildlife at the World Wildlife Fund Canada, said the orca were still 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) from where they should be at this time of year.

"They got stuck (in Hudson Bay) and they're unlikely to get out," said Ewins, adding that killer?whales?are not accustomed to ice.

"These guys are on the edge and they might not make it through."

Jackson tweeted, "So sad to hear of David R Ellis passing! So talented, so kind, such a Good Friend. He'll be missed. Gone too soon!"

Ellis didn't jump into directing right away. The Hollywood native actually began his journey into show business as a child actor in Disney films, and then following a successful career as a junior pro surfer, Ellis started doing stunt work on films like "Smokey and the Bandit II," "Scarface," "Rocky III" and "Lethal Weapon." Then he began doing second unit directorial work on "Clear and Present Danger," "Waterworld," "The Perfect Storm," "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and "The Matrix Reloaded."

Take a moment to remember these fallen stars

Finally, he made his directorial debut with "Final Destination 2" and later directed the Chris Evans flick "Cellular," "Homeward Bound 2: Lost in San Francisco" and "Snakes on a Plane," which became famous for Jackson's line: "I have had it with these m------------ snakes on this m------------ plane." Ellis' latest work includes the 3-D release "Shark Night" in 2011, and second unit work on 2013 releases "R.I.P.D." and "47 Ronin."?

Volunteers wanted to help foster children find homes - WTVR 6

Posted on: 1:00 pm, January 4, 2013, by Scott Wise and Jake Burns, updated on: 02:50pm, January 4, 2013

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) ? Across the commonwealth, more than 1,300 children are in Virginia?s foster care system. Around 30 percent of these kids will ?phase out,? or stay in the system until they turn 18 years old.

A local movement by one adoption agency is underway to curb this statistic.

?Statistically, we know that when a child is not placed with an adopted family, and they simply age out of foster care, the outcome is dire,? Nadine Marsh-Carter, President of Children?s Home Society of Virginia, said.

Marsh-Carter said 25 percent of teens who phase out of the foster care system will end up in jail by the time they are 20 years old, and one in every five will be homeless.

But the transition from foster care to adoption is made easier by good foster homes, she said.

To help ensure that foster children have good homes to live in, Henrico County Department of Social Services holds periodic informational sessions for residents interested in becoming foster parents.

A crowd of over a dozen came out to one held Thursday night.

These meetings hold new importance now because the number of children in Henrico?s foster care system increased in 2012 to 94 kids, up from 73 at this point last year.

?It will be beautiful,? said Beth Mack, who attended Thursday?s session.? ?It might be a lot of dark on the way to beautiful, or a lot of confusion for everybody, but really the basics are going to be there.?

Mack planned on going through the training process to become a foster parent.

?Foster care is a great short term solution, and adoption is at the other end of the spectrum. It?s more permanent,? Marsh-Carter said.

To learn more about the adoption process, visit Children?s Home Society of Virginia on their website:? www.chsva.org.

Also, residents of Henrico County interesting in becoming foster parents can contact the Henrico County Department of Social Services.? Please call Georgia Phillips at (804) 501-7496 or Riva O?Sullivan at (804) 501-7182.

Insight ? Can Breast Cancer Patients Avoid Multiple Surgeries?

When Jane Davis was diagnosed with breast cancer last July, she began learning as much as she could about her disease. Davis quickly discovered one of the most startling statistics about breast cancer:?Up to 40 percent of women who have a lumpectomy require a second surgery. That?s because surgeons often cannot microscopically remove the entire tumor.

But Mehra Golshan, MD, FACS, director of Breast Surgical Services at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women?s Cancer Center, is trying to change that with a phase I breast surgery pilot study. It?s the first of its kind in the world.

Here?s how it works: The procedure takes place in the AMIGO operating room, a unique suite at Brigham and Women?s Hospital equipped with MRI, CT scan, PET scan, X-ray, and ultrasound capabilities. An initial MRI taken just prior to the procedure provides a clear view of the tumor location. The surgeon then?sees real-time images as the procedure progresses, allowing the medical team to review results of the surgery while the patient is still in the operating room. Additional tissue can be removed as needed, without requiring a second surgery.

Mehra Golshan, MD,FACS, is evaluating a type of breast surgery that captures the entire tumor.

Golshan says it?s a safer, more effective, and less intrusive option. Initial results are promising, with women having their tumor removed in?its entirety.

For Davis, the procedure allowed her to focus on healing. During her successful surgery last September, her entire tumor was removed. She had only minimal discomfort and felt well enough to go back to work soon after.

?I was confident that this procedure would offer me the best chance of a positive outcome, and help me avoid a second surgery,? Davis said. ?I feel so grateful for the wonderful care I?ve received.?
